Jack Mercer actually began his career in
Popeye cartoons as an animator. However, he was overheard
by one of the Fleischer brothers of Fleischer Studios performing
a good impression of Popeye shortly after the services of
the original voice, William “Red Pepper Sam” Costello, were
terminated.
Although Jack was very close to a promotion in the animation
department and was only impersonating the voice for fun,
Jack was convinced to become the voice of Popeye and would
continue the role for 45 years, earning a spot in the Guinness
World Records. He would voice other characters and serve
as a writer for Fleischer Studios. The talented Jack Mercer
died in 1984.
